Descendants of Joseph Ramsdell & Sarah Jane Wilcox

The first Ramsdells, two brothers, left Scotland. They were Jacobites or Presbyterians. The Church of England persecuted the Scotch so they went to Holland, and then to America about the first of AD 1700, and then settled at Lynn, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. They married and raised families.

The Ramsdells were at the Tea Party and Jimmy Ramsdell helped throw the tea from the wharf at Boston. He told Father he would have to fight the English or be hung for treason against the King of England so he enlisted and served in the Colonial Army. Was with Gen. Washington at Valley Forge, was in the March to Trenton, New Jersey, fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill.

After the war some of the soldiers got land grants in Maine. Jimmy was stationed at the American fort at East Port, Maine. He married a French girl by the name of Mary Morang, her brothers served in the Army. They got land in Lubec, Maine. Jimmy served thirteen years in the army. His wife stayed on the homestead at Lubec ridge. They had quite a family of which my father, Joseph Ramsdell belonged.
