Descendants of THOMAS GUBTAIL (Guptill) for 7 Generations

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 GUBTAIL was born 1650 in Wales (Source: Mildred L. Jacobson, Guptill Genealogy, Ye Galleon Press Fairfield, Washington), and died 1695 in Portsmouth, NH. He married MARY ABBOTT, daughter of WALTER ABBOTT and SARAH STEWARD.

Notes for THOMAS GUBTAIL:

THIS THOMAS IS MY 8TH GREAT GRANDFATHER:

"The first record of the Guptill(Gubtail) name in this country is of Thomas Gubtail, who may have been born in England, Scotland or Wales!?! He was in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1670 and on the tax list in 1672. His wife, Mary Abbot, born about 1652 was the daughter of Walter and Mary (Or possibly Sarah) of Portsmouth. They received a deed of a log house and 1/2 acre from her mother and stepfather, Henry Sherbourne (from the Genealogy Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire) in 1680. Thomas was alive in 1686 but had certainly died before 1696, when his widow married William Caverly. She was alive as late as 1732 when she and her two Caverly children sold rights in the estate of her second husband. There are no birth records for Guptill children, but it is assumed that the following, all mentioned in that area, were children of Thomas and Mary (Abbott) Guptill. Only Nathaniel is known to have had male heirs."

Taken from "One Line of Guptill Descent" compiled by Claude W. Barlow, Ph.D. Worcester, Mass, 1963. Copy found at N.E. His Gen, Boston, Mass.

Reference to Gubtails being from Wales was found in several sources; one is the following: "Fond Memory" by Myra Smith Earl (published by her family twenty years after her death.)

page 21:"I think you should know something about all these ancestors, the kind of lives they lived and the houses in which they lived them. The Guptills were Welsh, the name originally having been Gubtail. As you will see, they and the Pendletons married and intermarried, Pendleton sons marrying Guptill daughters and Guptill sons marrying Pendelton daughters."

From "Ancestors~Relatives~Descendants of Guptill" by John T. and Dolores Guptill: Thomas Guptaile was a Captain, a mariner. He was lost at sea after 1686.

Notes for THOMAS GUBTAIL:

Quote from "The Guptill Genealogy",by Grace Guptill and Zula Guptill Holmes,a copy given to me on 19 June 1997.

"Thomas Guptill had a grant of land at Salmon Falls, NH of 50 acres., May 20th, 1703. He and his wife Mary sold this land to John Shorey on the 20th of October, 1728.

From "Guptill Genealogy" by Mildred L Jacobson, page 8:"Thomas Gubtail2, b. abt. 1675, Berwick, Me. He was listed in the roll call of Cpt. James Grant & Co., Sept 20 to Oct 9, 1725. He fought on the side of Ens. Thomas Abbot in 1701 to keep the fowling marsh. Granted 50 acres above Salmon Falls in 1703; taxed in Berwick 1713. He and wife Mary o.c. in First Church of Berwick. He was still living in 1736. Only recorded child, Mary, born abt. Apr 16, 1705. She married John Pearce Feb 11, 1725. No further data."

3. NATHANIEL2 GUBTAIL (THOMAS1) (Source: Various:, "Early Families of Gouldsboro, Maine" page 111 by Muriel Sampson Johnson; Guptill Genealogy by Mildred L. Jacobson; "The Guptill Genealogy" by Grace Guptill and Zula Guptill Holmes.) was born 1685 in presumably Wales(I don't agree~Kerry Kosky) (Source: Muriel Sampson Johnson, Early Families of Gouldsboro, Maine, (Picton Press, Camden, Maine 1990). Also "Guptill Genealogy" by Mildred L. Jacobson), and died 1762 in South Berwick, ME. He married MARY ISSELTON September 30, 1708 in Portsmouth, NH, daughter of BENJAMIN ISSELTON.

Notes for NATHANIEL GUBTAIL:

THIS NATHANIEL IS MY 7TH GREAT GRANDFATHER:

Quoted from "Early Families of Gouldsboro, Maine" by Muriel Sampson Johnson:"Nathaniel Gubtail was born in Wales(I,Kerry Kosky, do not agree~I believe he must have been born in Portsmouth) but was not baptized until 11 Nov 1716 when he was living in Berwick, Maine. He died sometime after 1762.

Nathaniel married Mary Isselton, daughter of Benjamin Isselton, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire."

"a mason"

Tax abated in 1713, living in Berwick, bp with wife Mary & 4 children on 11 Nov 1716

Quoted from"The Guptill Genealogy" by Grace Guptill and Zula Guptill Holmes:

Nathaniel Guptill, who was probably a brother of Thomas Guptill, was born about 1680. Rev. Sinnett says he was born in England but I believe the evidence is that he was born in or near Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was living in South Berwick, Maine in 1762. Noyes states that Nathaniel married twice and there seems to be support in that he married Mary Issalton in Portsmouth in the North Church on September 30, 1708 and his first child Mary was born in 1705. The records of the old church of South Berwick give the names of the parents of the Guptill children that were baptized there as Nathaniel Guptill and Mary. After this Nathaniel seem to have owned quite a lot of land at Kittery, Maine which was near his old home at S. Berwick."

Quoted from Gen Dic ME & NH: "Couple settled in South Berwick, Maine where children were baptised in Berwick Church 11 Nov 1716."

John Gubtail, who settled in Gouldsboro with his wife Abigail (Goodwin) in 1762, was the son of Nathaniel and Mary. In 1852 Hilliard M. Sowle, who was Town Clerk of Gouldsboro, changed the spelling of the name from "Gubtail" to "Guptill" in the town records and it was accepted as the family spelling. Guptill was used herein. (Source: Gouldsboro Historical Society and Grand Manan Archives, Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada).

Notes for ABIJAH GUBTAIL:

From "Guptill Genealogy" by Mildred L. Jacobson, page 20:"He(Abijah) moved with his father's family to Gouldsboro, Me. around 1770, and in 1779 was back on Grand Manan. Abijah served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War in the Castine area at Bagaduce, ME and received pay for travel up to 50 miles.

On Grand Manan Island, Abijah bought from his brother, Thomas, 87 acres granted to Thomas by the government (Book 'P', p. 457, 458). It appears to have been Lot #37, since in 1835 the sons and daughters of Abijah sold to James Rait of St. Andrews a 1-acre piece of waterfront land on Grand Harbour Stream, known and distinguished as Lot #37, for erecting dams and mills and other conveniences.

In 1808, Abijah petitioned for 200 acres of land on Grand Manan; stated then that he had a wife and nine children and that he had always been a British subject. He is mentioned in the Donald McDonald's 1804 report, "On the reserved lot at the Grand Brook there is aperson by the name of Abijah Gubtail who, with his son, is settled on the lot in opposition to the general wish of the inhabitants. The lot, it seems, was always intended for public uses." In 1778 Abijah married Mary Uraan (b. 1763) of Gouldsboro, Me. He d. in 1815 and she d. in 1839, both are bur. in St. Paul's Cemetery on Grand Manan Island. (Census records and tombstone inscrip. in Charlotte County, in Fredericton, N.B.) Two of his four sons mentioned in the 1790 census are believed to be Scott and Lawton Gubtail, for which there is no data. Records for only six other children."

During the Ware of 1812, Benjamin was captured by the British at Norwood's Cove and later released. His famous command to his son during the Battle of Norwoods Cove, when the British held him prisoner in the bottom of one of their boats, has made him one of Maine's heroes. 34. ABIGAIL5 CHADBOURNE (HANNAH4 GUBTAIL, SAMUEL3, NATHANIEL2, THOMAS1) (Source: The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, Jan 1995, January 1995, page 49.) was born January 31, 1781 in Berwick, ME, and died 1849 in Berwick, ME. She married BENJAMIN GRANT (Source: The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, Jan 1995.) January 26, 1804 in Berwick, ME (Source: Town & Vital Records of Berwick, Maine.), son of NATHANIEL GRANT and ELIZABETH GOODWIN.

Notes for ABIGAIL CHADBOURNE:

NE His & Gen Register, Jan 1995, page 49;"On 21 March 1838, Joseph Prime, town clerk of Berwick, Maine, entered in the town records, in family Bible style that inclulded the births and some deaths of their children, the information that Abigail Chadbourne, born 31 January 1781, married in January 1803 Benjamin Grant, born 16 May 1777. This marriage record, although evidently a year off the mark, is supported in the listing of publishments and certificates of marriage for Berwick as "Benjamin Grant and Nabby Chadbourne, both of Berwick, certificate January 26, 1804."

Notes for BENJAMIN GRANT:

From NE His & Gen Register, Jan, 1995, pg 49:

"Benjamin and Abigail are buried, together with some of their children, in Cemetery #89 on South Berwick Turnpike, their stones give Benjamin's dates as 1779-1872 and Abigail's as 1781-1849. But while these dates and the parentage of Benjamin Grant are readily confirmed through town records, no such record exists for the birth of Abigail Chadbourne. The Chadbourne Family Association states that Abigail was the daughter of Scammon Chadbourne and Hannah Gubtail, but gives little evidence for this identification. The best source of verification for this connection is a genealogical chart constructed by Enoch Chase, first cousin of Abigail Chadbourne, and son of Prudence(Chadbourne)Chase, sister to Scammon. The chart was drawn in 1858, showing a partial list of the descendants of Humphrey Chadbourne and including information that Scammon Chadbourne, born about 1760, married Hannah Gubtail and had children: Wentworth, Ssarah, Abigail and Benjamin. Because the town records of Berwick, Maine are incomplete, contemporary sources such as the Chase chart provide important evidence - Enoch Chase, born 1792, should certainly be able to identify his own first cousins."

Same source, page 51:"Scammon was the major heir of his father's property in Berwick. On 11 Sept 1822, Scammon Chadbourne sold to Wentworth Chadbourne of Berwick, carpenter, 30 acres in Berwick, 'the northwesterly side of the farm on which I now live...except 5 acres contained within the above bounds, which the said Wentworth purchased of his grandfather, Joseph Chadbourne, deceased...for the use of said Scammon and Mercy, his wife, for and during their natural lives...with remainder in fee to the said Wentworth...' When he died, his death was recorded but no will was ever probated."

THIS WILLIAM IS MY 4TH GREAT GRANDFATHER:

fisherman

Moved to Grand Manan Island, Canada in 1799.

"Grand Manan...the southern outpost of Canada, accessible only from the Canadian side of Passamaquoddy Bay...2 hour, 20 mile crossing by ferry...watching the great basalt cliffs rear out of the bay...fogs which in typical Fundy-fashion can lie like limp pancakes over the island for days. From the eastern shoreline, cut with coves and protected by scatterings of tiny islets, Grand Manan tilts upwards towards the 400 foot basalt cliffs of its western edge rising like battlements from the ocean...Many of the traditional familie--, the Ingalls, Greens, Browns, Guptills and Daggets ("you can tell which name a fella's got, just from lookin' at him") disagreed about the opening of a State Liquor store on the island in 1972. Now people can drink in private but the diehards are determined to prevent public drinking in bars or hotels." (Quoted from: "Secluded Islands of the Atlantic Coast" by David Yeadon
